The relations between Britain and the United States have their roots in a war, the American War of Independence, initiated on 18 April with exchanges of fire at Lexington between the colonists and British forces, and concluded by the Peace of Paris on 3 September , which left uncertain the boundaries with British North America.
For the American colonists the separation from the mother country marked the birth of a new nation. Studies of Anglo-American relations during the s have emphasised the extent to which the United States increased its economic power in relation to that of Britain. The wartime alliance between Britain and the United States was for many years viewed through the vision Winston Churchill presented of it in his memoirs of the Second World War, published between and at the time of the joining of the Cold War and the revival of the Anglo-American special relationship in what many statesmen considered its close and effective partnership, apparently evidenced during the Second World War.

In public, in the postwar era, Churchill spoke of the relationship in terms of a cultural unity shown by the English Speaking peoples, of this being the natural force for the peace and order of the world.
